This year, Lithuanian Catholic Religious Aid marks its 65th anniversary. Over the years, the organization has placed a strong focus on Catholic education, youth development, the promotion of social responsibility, and religious and charitable activities. Its role became especially important following the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, when the country needed not only material support but also people willing to contribute to building a new social and moral foundation.

Alexandra Kalvenas-Kazickas (1920–2011) was also part of LCRA’s history, serving on its Board of Directors from 1993 to 1996. Whenever she came to Lithuania from New York, Alexandra made a point of visiting as many Catholic schools and kindergartens as possible. During her years on the Board, she also reached out to friends in the United States to ask for their support of LCRA’s work. Each received a personal, handwritten letter. A copy of one such letter was found among her private papers after her death. We are sharing an excerpt:

“I am a member of the board of the Lithuanian Catholic Religious Aid Organization. Its primary activity is directed towards the education of youth and the promotion of social responsibility. The country is tragically short of religious literature, teachers, priests, facilities, schools etc. LCRA’s activity depends strictly on the dedicated individuals who give their time, financial support and most of all, love expressed in so many touching ways… It is never a pleasure to ask for help. It is so much more enjoyable to give. But at this most critical time for Lithuania, I am asking you to extend your generosity to our little country. Whatever the size of your donation, it will be a brick or a rock on which a new moral foundation will be built for the people to live civilized lives in a free and just society.“ (1993, Greenwich, CT)

As LCRA marks its 65th anniversary, we remember Alexandra’s contribution and all those who, over the decades, have contributed to strengthening Lithuania through their time, work, support, and dedication.

The 65th anniversary celebrations will take place in Lemont and Chicago on September 19–20, 2026.
